Overview
The Dog Pregnancy Calculator helps dog owners and breeders estimate when their dog is likely to give birth (whelp) and understand what is happening inside the womb at each point along the way. Canine pregnancy is short and fast-moving — just over nine weeks — so knowing the timeline helps you prepare the whelping area, schedule veterinary checks, and recognise when labour is approaching.
This tool is built for home breeders, first-time owners of a pregnant dog, and anyone managing a planned litter. Instead of guessing, you enter one known date — the breeding date, the ovulation date, or the LH-surge date — and the calculator returns a realistic due date, a safe due-date window, the current stage of pregnancy, and a dated milestone schedule you can plan around.
How It Works
- Select the reference date on the calendar — the day the breeding, ovulation, or LH surge happened.
- Choose what that date is based on. Progesterone/ovulation timing is the most accurate; a plain mating date is the most common but has a wider margin.
- Click Calculate Due Date. The results appear just below the form.
- Review the estimated due date, the earliest-to-latest window, how far along your dog is today, and the dated milestone table.
- Click Reset to clear everything and run a new estimate.
Formula Explanation
Canine gestation is counted from a biological reference point. The expected whelping day differs depending on which event you measured from, because ovulation and mating do not happen on exactly the same day.
Due date = Ovulation date + 63 days (window 62–64 days)
Due date = LH surge + 65 days (window 64–66 days)
Due date = Mating date + 63 days (window 58–68 days)
The mating-date window is the widest because sperm can survive several days in the reproductive tract, so fertilisation may happen days after the mating itself. Ovulation and LH-surge dates pin the biology down far more precisely, which is why vets rely on progesterone testing for accurate due dates. The milestone dates below are measured from ovulation, so when you enter an LH-surge date the tool shifts the schedule forward by about two days to match when ovulation actually occurs.
Practical Benefits
- Prepare on time: know when to set up the whelping box and gather supplies before labour starts.
- Plan vet visits: line up ultrasound (around day 25–30) and X-ray puppy counts (around day 45) on the right dates.
- Watch the right window: start temperature monitoring near the end so you can catch the drop that signals whelping within 24 hours.
- Reduce risk: recognising an overdue pregnancy early lets you call your vet before it becomes an emergency.
- Peace of mind: a clear, dated timeline removes guesswork for first-time breeders.
