Dog Heartworm Prevention Dosage Calculator
Estimate monthly heartworm preventive dosing by body weight using FDA-labeled active-ingredient rates, then confirm the exact product and amount with your veterinarian.
Dosing rates last verified against FDA drug label data — always confirm current rates with your veterinarian or product insert.
Overview
Heartworm disease is caused by Dirofilaria immitis, a parasitic worm transmitted through mosquito bites that can live in a dog's heart and lungs for years, causing lasting damage before symptoms even appear. Monthly preventive medication is the single most effective defense, but it only works if the dose matches the dog's actual weight — too little active ingredient can leave gaps in protection, while incorrect off-label dosing can be dangerous.
This calculator is built for pet owners, veterinary technicians, shelter staff, and breeders who want a fast, transparent way to see how a dog's weight translates into an active-ingredient dose, using the same FDA-labeled minimum rates printed on commercial preventive packaging (Heartgard®, Interceptor®, Sentinel®, and their generic equivalents). It is designed as an educational reference and a conversation starter with your veterinarian — not a substitute for a prescription.
How It Works
- Enter your dog's weight. Use a recent, accurate weight from a home or vet-clinic scale — toggle between pounds and kilograms as needed.
- Choose the active ingredient. Select ivermectin or milbemycin oxime, the two most common monthly heartworm preventive actives, to match what your vet has prescribed or what's on your product label.
- Flag any relevant conditions. Puppy status, MDR1-sensitive breeds, pregnancy, or unknown heartworm status all change how prevention should be approached — check any that apply.
- Review the breakdown. The results panel shows the estimated milligram dose, the labeled dosing band your dog falls into, and any safety notes specific to the flags you selected.
Formula Explanation
Every commercial monthly heartworm preventive is manufactured to deliver at least a fixed minimum amount of active ingredient per kilogram of body weight. The calculator converts your dog's weight to kilograms, then multiplies by the FDA-labeled minimum rate for the selected drug:
Dose (mg) = Body weight (kg) × Minimum labeled rate (mg/kg)
The labeled minimum rates used in this tool are:
- Ivermectin: 0.006 mg/kg (6 mcg/kg) — the FDA-approved minimum monthly heartworm-prevention rate.
- Milbemycin oxime: 0.5 mg/kg — the labeled minimum rate used in Interceptor®, Sentinel®, and equivalent products.
Commercial tablets are sold in fixed weight-band sizes (for example, "up to 25 lb," "26–50 lb"), so your veterinarian or pharmacist will round up to the nearest tablet strength — never split or estimate a partial tablet without guidance, since under-dosing can allow infection to take hold.
Practical Benefits
Catch weight-band changes early
Growing puppies and dogs on weight-management plans can cross into a new dosing band between vet visits — this tool flags that instantly.
Compare products at a glance
See how ivermectin and milbemycin oxime doses differ for the same dog, useful when switching brands or discussing options with your vet.
Multi-pet households
Shelters, breeders, and multi-dog homes can quickly re-check dosing across dogs of very different sizes without manual unit conversion.
Informed vet conversations
Walk into an appointment already understanding the math behind your dog's prescription, making it easier to ask the right questions.
