Overview

Omega-3 fatty acids — specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) from marine (fish) oil — are among the most evidence-backed supplements in canine nutrition. They support a shiny coat and healthy skin, calm inflammation in aging joints, aid heart and kidney function, and contribute to brain and eye development in puppies.

The challenge for most dog owners is translating a general recommendation into a precise, safe daily amount for their dog and their specific product. Fish oil products vary enormously in strength, and a flat "one capsule per day" rarely fits a 4 kg Chihuahua and a 40 kg Labrador equally.

This calculator is built for dog owners, breeders, and pet-care professionals. It sizes the daily EPA + DHA target to your dog using metabolic body weight — the same scaling method used in veterinary nutrition — then converts that target into the exact number of servings of the fish oil you actually own.

How It Works

  1. Enter your dog's weight. Type the body weight and pick kilograms or pounds. Pounds are converted to kilograms automatically.
  2. Choose a health goal. Each goal uses a different EPA + DHA intensity, from gentle maintenance to higher therapeutic support.
  3. Enter your product's EPA and DHA. Read these two numbers straight off the supplement label (per capsule, per mL, or per chew). If the label only lists a combined "Omega-3" figure, put it in the EPA box and leave DHA at 0.
  4. Select what one serving is — a capsule, millilitre, pump, teaspoon, or chew — so results are shown in units you can measure.
  5. Click Calculate. You'll get a daily serving amount, the underlying EPA + DHA target in milligrams, and a safety check against the maximum tolerated intake.

Results stay hidden until you calculate, and Reset clears every field so you can run another dog from scratch.

Formula Explanation

Nutrient needs don't scale in a straight line with body weight — a dog twice as heavy does not need exactly twice the dose. Veterinary nutrition instead scales by metabolic body weight, which is body weight raised to the power of 0.75. This prevents large dogs from being overdosed and small dogs from being underdosed.

Step 1 — Metabolic weight

Metabolic weight = (weight in kg) ^ 0.75

Step 2 — Daily EPA + DHA target

Target (mg/day) = Goal factor × Metabolic weight

Step 3 — Servings of your product

Servings/day = Target ÷ (EPA + DHA per serving)

The goal factor is the milligrams of EPA + DHA per unit of metabolic weight, based on commonly cited clinical dosing ranges:

Health goalGoal factor (mg per kg0.75)
General wellness & coat50
Skin, itch & allergy support125
Joint & mobility / arthritis100
Heart & kidney support140

As a safety ceiling, the tool compares the result against the National Research Council (NRC) safe upper limit of 370 mg EPA + DHA per kg0.75 and warns you if a dose approaches it.

Practical Benefits

  • Buy and dose smarter. See whether a product is strong enough for your dog, or whether you'd be feeding an impractical number of capsules each day.
  • Avoid under-dosing. Many owners give far less EPA + DHA than a therapeutic goal actually requires — this shows the real target.
  • Avoid over-dosing. High omega-3 intake can cause loose stools, bleeding tendency, or weight gain from extra calories; the built-in upper-limit check flags excess.
  • Compare products fairly. Two bottles with different EPA/DHA concentrations can be compared by how many servings each would need per day.
  • Tailor by condition. A dog with itchy skin or arthritis needs a different intensity than a healthy dog on maintenance — the goal selector handles that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Count only EPA + DHA — these are the active omega-3s that drive the skin, joint, and anti-inflammatory benefits. A "1000 mg fish oil" capsule often contains only about 300 mg of actual EPA + DHA, so always read the two separate figures on the label and enter those, not the total oil weight.

If the label gives a single combined EPA + DHA (or "total omega-3") value, type that number into the EPA box and leave DHA at 0. The calculator simply adds the two boxes together, so the math stays correct either way.

Plain fish oil with no added flavourings, sweeteners, or xylitol is generally the same molecule whether sold for people or pets. Enter that product's EPA and DHA as normal. Avoid cod liver oil for routine dosing, as its high vitamin A and D content can build up to toxic levels over time.

Coat and skin improvements are often visible in 4–8 weeks, while joint and anti-inflammatory benefits typically build over 6–12 weeks of consistent daily dosing. Introduce fish oil gradually over several days to let your dog's digestion adjust.
