Benadryl Dosage Calculator for Dogs

Estimate a safe diphenhydramine (Benadryl) dose for your dog by body weight, with tablet and children's liquid equivalents.

Use your dog's current, accurate weight.

Enter a realistic weight: 0.5–250 lb (≈0.2–113 kg).

Choose the unit that matches the value above.
Use only plain diphenhydramine — no added decongestant/pain reliever.
Typical range is every 8–12 hours.
Single Dose (per administration)
Always confirm the dose and product with your veterinarian before giving any medication.

Overview

The Benadryl Dosage Calculator for Dogs converts your dog's body weight into an estimated single dose of diphenhydramine — the active antihistamine in plain Benadryl — and translates that dose into everyday measurements: whole/partial 25 mg tablets and millilitres of children's liquid (12.5 mg / 5 mL).

It's built for dog owners who have been advised by a veterinarian to use Benadryl for mild seasonal allergies, itching, insect bites, or motion sickness, and who want a clear, weight-based reference before measuring a dose. It matters because getting the amount right — and using the correct plain-diphenhydramine product — is the difference between safe relief and an accidental overdose from combination cold or allergy formulas.

How It Works

  1. Enter your dog's current weight and select pounds or kilograms.
  2. Pick the product you actually have (tablets, liquid, or show all forms).
  3. Choose a dosing frequency — every 12 hours (2× daily) or every 8 hours (3× daily).
  4. Click Calculate Dosage. The tool shows the single dose in milligrams plus the tablet and/or liquid equivalent, and the total daily amount.
  5. Click Reset to clear everything and start over.

Nothing is calculated until you press Calculate, and the results stay hidden until then.

Formula Explanation

The calculator uses the standard, widely referenced canine dosing rule for diphenhydramine:

Single dose (mg) = Body weight (lb) × 1 mg/lb

Weight entered in kilograms is first converted with lb = kg × 2.20462. From the single dose, the tool derives:

  • 25 mg tablets = single dose ÷ 25, rounded to the nearest ¼ tablet (doses too small to split accurately are directed to the liquid form instead).
  • Children's liquid (2.5 mg/mL) = single dose ÷ 2.5, rounded to one decimal place.
  • Total per day = single dose × number of doses (2 or 3).

The 1 mg-per-pound rule reflects real-world veterinary practice rather than a theoretical maximum, and the tool caps the modelled single dose at a conservative 50 mg for very large dogs, since most clinical guidance does not exceed that amount per administration without direct veterinary direction.

Practical Benefits

  • Removes guesswork: turns a weight into a concrete tablet count or millilitre measure you can actually pour or split.
  • Prevents overdose: flags the plain-diphenhydramine-only requirement so you avoid dangerous combination products with pseudoephedrine or acetaminophen.
  • Better vet conversations: gives you a shared reference dose to confirm with your veterinarian before the first administration.
  • Handles both products: useful whether you keep 25 mg tablets or children's liquid at home, and for small dogs where liquid is easier to measure.
  • Daily-total awareness: shows the combined amount across the day so you can pace doses safely.

Disclaimer: This calculator is an educational estimate only and is not veterinary advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Diphenhydramine dosing can vary with a dog's age, breed, health conditions, and other medications, and some dogs should not receive it at all. Never give Benadryl products that contain additional active ingredients (such as decongestants or pain relievers). Always consult a licensed veterinarian before giving any medication, and seek immediate veterinary care if you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction.
