Overview
The Dog Compatibility Checker helps you answer the single most important question before bringing a dog home: will this breed actually fit my life? Too many adoptions and purchases go wrong not because the dog is "bad," but because a high-drive herding breed landed in a quiet apartment, or a heavy-shedding giant moved in with an allergy-conscious family.
This tool compares the real temperament and care profile of a chosen breed against twelve things about your world — your home, your schedule, your activity level, your experience, your family, and your climate — and returns a clear percentage match with a plain-language breakdown. It is built for prospective owners, families weighing their first dog, and anyone deciding between two or three breeds they already like.
How It Works
- Pick the breed you're considering from the dropdown.
- Fill in your home type, activity level, and the realistic amount of daily exercise you can commit to.
- Add how long the dog would be left alone, your experience level, and who else lives at home — children and other pets.
- Set your tolerance for grooming, shedding, and barking, and choose your climate.
- Press Check Compatibility. You'll get an overall match score, your strongest fit areas, the things to watch, and a dimension-by-dimension breakdown.
Nothing is calculated until you press the button, and Reset clears everything so you can test another breed.
Formula Explanation
Each breed carries a care-and-temperament profile rated on a 1–5 scale across traits like energy, size, grooming need, shedding, beginner-friendliness, tolerance for being alone, and sociability with kids, dogs, and cats. Your answers are scored against each trait to produce a 0–100 sub-score per dimension. The overall match is a weighted average of those sub-scores:
- Exercise & energy fit18%
- Home & space fit12%
- Time-alone tolerance12%
- Experience match11%
- Compatibility with children11%
- Grooming commitment8%
- Other-pet compatibility8%
- Shedding tolerance7%
- Barking / noise tolerance7%
- Climate suitability6%
Exercise and energy carry the most weight because an exercise mismatch is the single most common cause of behaviour problems. The model also applies real-world guardrails — for example, a very high-energy breed with a sedentary owner is capped even when the raw minutes look sufficient, and a vocal breed in an apartment is penalised for the neighbours' sake.
Practical Benefits
- Avoid a costly mismatch. Re-homing a dog is heartbreaking and expensive; a five-minute check beforehand surfaces the deal-breakers early.
- Compare breeds objectively. Run two or three shortlisted breeds through the same answers and compare the scores side by side.
- Know what you're signing up for. The watch-outs tell you exactly where you'll need to put in extra work — grooming, training, or exercise.
- Set realistic expectations for the whole family. Everyone sees the same honest breakdown before a decision is made.
