Dog Supply Checklist Generator
Answer a few questions about your dog and get a personalized supply checklist with realistic quantities, size-matched gear, and estimated startup and monthly costs.
Overview
Bringing home a dog — or adding a second one — comes with a surprisingly long shopping list, and it's easy to either overspend on things you don't need or forget essentials until the moment you need them. This generator turns your dog's actual profile into a practical, prioritized checklist instead of a generic one-size-fits-all list.
It's built for first-time owners, people welcoming a new puppy or rescue, and multi-dog households who want a clear picture of both the one-time startup cost and the ongoing monthly spend before they commit. Every quantity and gear size is matched to your dog's weight, age, coat, and environment.
How It Works
- Enter your dog's weight in kilograms or pounds — this drives food amounts and gear sizing.
- Set the number of dogs so quantities and recurring costs scale correctly.
- Choose life stage, coat type, setup, and climate. These tailor which items appear (e.g. puppy pads, a de-matting comb, a winter coat).
- Click "Generate Checklist." You'll get category-by-category items with quantities, notes, and cost estimates, plus a summary of startup and monthly totals.
- Tick items off as you shop, and use Reset to start over for another dog.
Formula Explanation
The checklist isn't a static list — the quantities and costs are calculated from your inputs.
Daily food amount
RER = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75 (resting energy, kcal/day)Daily calories = RER × life-stage factorLife-stage factor: Puppy 2.5, Adult 1.6, Senior 1.4.
Daily food (g) = Daily calories ÷ 3,600 kcal/kg × 1,000
This uses the resting-energy formula vets rely on, which scales far more accurately than a flat percentage of body weight across toy to giant breeds. It assumes average-activity dogs on dry kibble at roughly 3,600 kcal per kg; puppies, working, pregnant, or highly active dogs need more.
Monthly food & recurring supplies
Monthly food (kg) = Daily food (g) ÷ 1000 × 30 × number of dogsWaste bags/month = number of dogs × 2 stools/day × 30
Cost totals
One-time startup = Σ (one-time item cost × quantity)Monthly recurring = food + treats + waste bags + parasite prevention (+ puppy pads)First-month total = startup + monthly recurring
Each item carries a low–high price range, so totals are shown as ranges rather than a single misleadingly precise figure.
Practical Benefits
- Budget with confidence: see the real first-month cost, not just the price of a leash and bowl.
- Buy the right size the first time: beds, crates, collars, and harnesses are matched to your dog's weight class.
- Avoid forgotten essentials: parasite prevention, ID tags, and stage-specific items like puppy pads are included automatically.
- Right-sized food orders: a realistic monthly kibble estimate helps you buy the correct bag size and avoid waste.
- Multi-dog ready: quantities and recurring costs scale so nothing is under-ordered.
